A Primer on Binocular Rivalry, Including Current Controversies

چکیده

Among psychologists and vision scientists, binocular rivalry has enjoyed sustained interest for decades dating back to the 19th century. In recent years, however, rivalry’s audience has expanded to include neuroscientists who envision rivalry as a “tool” for exploring the neural concomitants of conscious visual awareness and perceptual organization. For rivalry’s potential to be realized, workers using this “tool” need to know details of this fascinating phenomenon, and providing those details is the purpose of this article. After placing rivalry in a historical context, I summarize major findings concerning the spatial characteristics and the temporal dynamics of rivalry, discuss two major theoretical accounts of rivalry (“eye” vs “stimulus” rivalry) and speculate on possible neural concomitants of binocular rivalry. key words: binocular rivalry, suppression, conscious awareness, neural model, perceptual organization

Binocular vision

This essay reviews major developments - empirical and theoretical - in the field of binocular vision during the last 25years. We limit our survey primarily to work on human stereopsis, binocular rivalry and binocular contrast summation, with discussion where relevant of single-unit neurophysiology and human brain imaging. We identify several key controversies that have stimulated important work...

Insights from Intermittent Binocular Rivalry and EEG

Novel stimulation and analytical approaches employed in EEG studies of ambiguous figures have recently been applied to binocular rivalry. The combination of intermittent stimulus presentation and EEG source imaging has begun to shed new light on the neural underpinnings of binocular rivalry. Here, we review the basics of the intermittent paradigm and highlight methodological issues important fo...

Attention model of binocular rivalry.

When the corresponding retinal locations in the two eyes are presented with incompatible images, a stable percept gives way to perceptual alternations in which the two images compete for perceptual dominance. As perceptual experience evolves dynamically under constant external inputs, binocular rivalry has been used for studying intrinsic cortical computations and for understanding how the brai...

Visible binocular beats from invisible monocular stimuli during binocular rivalry

When two qualitatively different stimuli are presented at the same time, one to each eye, the stimuli can either integrate or compete with each other. When they compete, one of the two stimuli is alternately suppressed, a phenomenon called binocular rivalry [1,2]. When they integrate, observers see some form of the combined stimuli. Many different properties (for example, shape or color) of the...

Right parietal TMS shortens dominance durations in binocular rivalry

Binocular rivalry occurs when dissimilar images are presented to each eye. Rather than a combined picture being perceived, each monocular image competes for perceptual dominance, becoming visible for a few seconds while the other is suppressed. Stable visual input thus leads to alternations in conscious perception, dissociating stimulation from awareness. This makes rivalry particularly useful ...
